EA FC 26 Back Shortly Evolution Guide: Best Left-Backs, Requirements and Upgrades

EA SPORTS FC 26's Back Shortly Evolution is a free FUTTIES upgrade for left-backs, needing five matches with strict PlayStyles+ caps before Aug 21.

EA SPORTS FC 26 has added another free Ultimate Team evolution during the FUTTIES period, and this one is aimed exclusively at left-backs. The Back Shortly Evolution is live now, giving players a straightforward way to upgrade an eligible defender without needing goals, assists or wins. However, the entry requirements are tighter than usual, and the evolution will disappear if you do not log in before 6:00 PM on Friday, August 21. With the right card, the finished item can become a genuine two-way option in Division Rivals and the Champions Weekend League.

Eligibility rules matter more than usual

Before slotting a card into the Back Shortly Evolution, players should make sure it actually qualifies. The restrictions are stricter than many other evolutions this season:

  • Overall: Max 95

  • Position: LB only

  • Max PlayStyles: 10

  • Max PlayStyles+: 4

The last condition is the one that catches people out. A card that already sits at the PlayStyles+ ceiling will not be eligible, so it is worth double-checking before committing. The evolution is free, but missing the login window means losing access entirely.

How the five-level path works

Every single level in Back Shortly has the same objective structure. There are five matches total, with no goal or assist requirement, no specific opponent type and no win condition. The only task is getting the selected left-back onto the pitch.

The table below summarises the upgrade pattern reported for the evolution. Because stat caps are strict, cards that are already close to a ceiling in key areas will see smaller gains.

Level Requirement Key Upgrades / PlayStyles
Level 1 Play 1 match Pace boost, Anticipate, Rapid
Level 2 Play 1 match Finishing and Long Shots toward 96, Pinged Pass
Level 3 Play 1 match Attacking and crossing upgrades, Low Driven Shot
Level 4 Play 1 match Passing and crossing upgrades, Finesse Shot
Level 5 Play 1 match Defensive ceiling: Slide Tackle and Stand Tackle at 97, Intercept

The defensive ceiling at Level 5 is genuinely impressive. Slide Tackle and Stand Tackle both hitting 97 makes the fully evolved card a defensive wall. At the same time, the shooting upgrades at Level 2 are more aggressive than most left-back evolutions this season. Finishing and Long Shots both reaching 96 can turn a full-back into a real goal threat from set pieces and overlapping runs.

Best players to consider

Raw base stats matter a lot in Back Shortly because of the rigid caps. Cards that are already close to the ceilings in key areas will see diminishing returns, so the best choices are players with room to grow. After testing several options against the upgrade numbers, the strongest direct picks include:

  • Maldini Trophy Titans Icon — one of the cleanest fits based on his base card profile.

  • Roberto Carlos Greats of the Game Icon — the early pace boost makes an already fast card terrifying.

  • Nuno Mendes TOTS — strong base stats with genuine room to grow in attacking categories.

  • Marcelo Trophy Titans Icon — an attacking left-back archetype that benefits heavily from the crossing and passing upgrades.

  • Heggem Showdown

  • Grimaldo Showdown

  • Livramento Showdown

  • Cucurella TOTS

  • Robertson EOAE

  • Theo Hernandez TOTS Honourable Mention

  • Isaak Toure FUTTIES

  • Collins FUTTIES

  • Hancko Glory Hunters

  • Mazraoui Summer Stars

  • Shaw Showdown

  • Arrey-Mbi Showdown

Evolution chains and alternative options

Some interesting candidates are only viable through an evolution chain. Players such as O'Reilly TOTS Breakthrough and Joao Cancelo FC Fantasy require the use of a prior evolution before they can enter Back Shortly. If a chain setup is not available, the Icon options and high-end TOTS cards are the safer bets.

The PlayStyles added across Levels 1 through 5 — Anticipate, Pinged Pass, Rapid, Low Driven Shot, Finesse Shot and Intercept — collectively make the finished card viable in multiple phases of play. Once the evolution is complete, the card may also receive new PlayStyles that further boost specific attributes.

Back Shortly sits in an interesting spot during the FUTTIES period. It is free, the objective requirements are minimal, and the final card ceiling is competitive. For players with coins to spend, the Left Behind Evolution offers a paid alternative that reaches a 97-rated ceiling. Meanwhile, the Flying Dutchman Evolution covers ST and CAM options, and the Cultured Commander Evolution can push a centre-back up to 96 OVR. Used together, these evolutions can quickly strengthen an entire defensive line and attack during the current Ultimate Team cycle.
